need more items to go with them, like feeders, and mouse guard. It's just too hard to improvise with standard products and these are so necessary.
The new hive kit made a good impression after opening the shipping box. I had expected material similar to a cooler box (plastic) but it turns out to be (high density) styrofoam … at least it is light and tight fit.
The disappointment came reading the installation instructions, realizing that the exterior surfaces needed to be painted. We are located in 6,000ft altitude, so the UV is intense.
I checked the web site again, and it is not explicitly mentioned that painting the exterior surfaces is STRONGLY suggested.
What should have been a hour long assembly turned into a two day paint and drying process.
I am not a professional bee keeper but a hobbyist, mostly used to the beewax covered wooden hives, ready to assemble and use within a few hours.
Maybe it is a common practice for professional beekeepers to paint the bee hives (as can seen in the orchards of the Central Valley along the highways. But it surely would have been nice to point out that extra step on the webpage.
